Eco-School Project

Eco-Schools is an international program of the “Foundation for Environmental Education”, developed in Portugal since 1996 by ABAAE – Blue Flag Association for Environment and Education, which aims to encourage actions and recognize the quality work developed by the school, within the scope of Environmental Education for Sustainability.

ACTIVITIES

Once registered, schools in the network receive a set of information and guidelines to facilitate the implementation of the Program. The coordination organizes training activities, such as the National Seminar, and dissemination activities such as Green Flags Day, among others. The coordinating teacher in each educational establishment is the focal point of Eco-Schools on the ground, and is responsible for bringing together the conditions, means and strategies to successfully implement the proposed methodology.

CERTIFICATION

  To receive the Green Flag, the school must demonstrate that it has followed the methodology of   7 steps :

  1. Eco-Schools Council,
  2. Environmental Audit,
  3. Action Plan,
  4. Curricular Work,
  5. Monitoring and Evaluation,
  6. Community Involvement
  7. Eco-Code.
  • Implement at least 2/3 of your action plan;
  • Carry out activities within the scope of the core themes (water, waste and energy) and at least one of the themes of the year (2024-25: outdoor spaces, biodiversity and/or climate action).

The action plan is designed by each school and must take into account the agenda of action/intervention priorities decided by the Eco-Schools Council. At the same time, schools are challenged to participate in various sub-projects that seek to (in)form and deepen and reward work within the scope of specific themes.

BEING AN ECO-SCHOOL IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

IT IS ABOUT BEING MORE ATTENTIVE, INTERVENTIVE, RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE…
